Just a quick video courtesy of Lenny and Jess taken at the Inspired Short Film Festival in Brisbane which our short film 'Captured' screened at in March.
I was unable to attend as I was in Bali on a shoot but I am grateful for all the family, friends, cast and crew that attended the screening.
Thank you for your support. More festivals to follow!

RETREAT ME TV PILOT - BALI RETREAT FILMED AND READY TO EDIT
On Monday myself and Julie arrived back in Australia after spending 12 days in Bali shooting the second episode of the self funded project ReTreat Me.
ReTreat Me is Julie's pet project, a lifestyle TV show focussing on retreats people can visit across Australia and abroad to better ones health and wellbeing.
Leisa Wheeler from Embracing Health held a ten day raw food and juice detox retreat in Ubud, Bali at Villa Gaia. We've filmed a majority of the retreat including lectures, guest speakers, yoga, temples, food prep and of course the scenery.
Both myself and Julie joined in the five day juice detox and raw food which for a cameraman was a little bit of a struggle at times as my best friend become the toilet, but boy oh boy I feel a hundred per cent better and have learnt so much about my body! Looking forward now!
Leisa was kind enough to sponsor our travel and stay at the retreat which we greatly appreciate!
I shot this episode of the show with very limited resources only taking my Canon 5D Mark II as the principal camera, tripod, jag35 mini field runner, a rode NTG-2 mic on a mini boom pole, a macbook pro and hard drive for data wrangling. A majority of the time I used available light where possible and the staff at Villa Gaia were able to supply us with two 300 watt work lights on stands that were tungsten balanced. All in all this skeleton crew worked a treat in creating this episode of the show.
Videos and photos coming soon! You are all in for a treat!!!

DIGITAL BOLEX D16 - shoots 2K Raw!!!
Now this is rather cool and fancy!
Growing up my Dad would always go on about Bolex 16mm cameras and how sought after and great they were. Well looks like the camera is making a return with the introduction of a digital bolex!
The digital Bolex shoots on a frame size equivalent to the 16mm frame which records in 2K Raw that is uncompressed unlike your standard digital recording systems!
This is something to look out for and sounds like it will be rather inexpensive to purchase.

WASTELANDER PANDA - Pledge and support this amazing project
For some time now I've been following the progress of a project in Adelaide, South Australia, where I grew up. There's a lot of great talent there especially in the world of film and image creation. One particular project that has interested me is the one of Wastelander Panda.
Written and directed by Victoria Cocks, Produced by Kirsty Stark and DPed by Vivyan Madigan (Epic Films) Wastelander Panda looks at the tale of the last remaining panda in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The team behind this created a three minute prologue which they uploaded to Vimeo to seek an audience and show funding bodies and television stations how popular a concept as such would be. After five days on Vimeo the prologue had over 100,000 online views from various countries across the globe!
As a next step the team want to create a series of web episodes that will lead into the full one hour television episode.
To support and fund this side of the project they are crowd funding through the site Pozible Australia's version of Kickstarter. By supporting the project through a donation you can be rewarded with various credits and packs relating to the film, donations start from as little as $1 right up $1000.
We all need support in anyway we can to help get our projects made. I'm a big fan of post-apocalyptic stories, ever since I watched the first Mad Max filmed I've been hooked on stories as such.
Show your support for the filmmakers at Epic Films and help get Wastelander Panda made! They haven't got long to go with raising the funding if they don't reach their funding target all they have to give all the support back! We don't want that happening!!

CANON 5D Mark III - The wait is over - what's the verdict?
As I write this blog I am in Bali filming at a retreat, I'm filming a 12 day health and well being experience to add to Julie's TV pilot 'Re-Treat Me'.
The scenery and people are amazing, the whole experience is enlightening. I've decided to shoot this part of the 'Re-Treat Me' on my Canon 5D Mark II my trusted work horse and ultra superb DSLR unit that shoots kick ass high video footage.
As of yesterday Canon have released the much awaited and rumoured Canon 5D Mark III. As a filmmaker I'm eager to get my hands on one of these to see what the improvements are and how the current shot I am on could benefit from it.
For a long time now I've heard and read a lot of rumours about what this camera will come out with which are mainly what people are wishing for really.
The 2nd of March 2012 smashed all the rumours and made it a reality. Here's what the Canon 5D Mark III will offer. Remember this still is a DSLR camera built for photographers so don't get to annoyed if it's not up to your expectations. I'm also merely going off what I am reading on the net and the press release from Canon - also gaining info from DSLR and filmmaking god Philip Bloom.
Canon 5D Mark III features and improvements up from the Mark II:
* New processor, greater image quality - slight improvement on moire and aliasing
* Jello effect from rolling shutter minimal
* Headphone jack so we can monitor sound!!! Oh and levels on screen we can change while recording!! Wowo!!!
* We can now record one continuous clip at just under 30 minutes!! This would be so awesome to have that here right now, as I'm only getting max 12 minutes at a time in one hit while recording speakers at this retreat. I can see this helping doco filmmakers and improving the way I tackle wedding videos now!
* Timecode is now apparent
* Better in low light now
* It still records in H264 whether they have changed bit rate etc is anyone's guess
* 50/60p make an appearance but only in 720p....why?
* 720p also shows up when you want to get a clean uncompressed signal out of the HDMI :/
* Price for body $3500 (US)
I guess if anything is you had a few EF lenses upgrading to the new body would be the way to go, it doesn't seem like a harsh jump in improvements but it's probably some finely tuned ones that we have all been crying out for in the filmmaking world.
Keen to try and buy one of these soon.
Pre-order the camera from here at B&H Photo.
Also sample pics and footage from the Mark III are available Canon 5D Mark III sample footage
Maybe I can contact a Canon representative here in Indonesia and get hold of the Canon 5D Mark III and set it through its paces on this retreat!
All in all this is good news for photographers and filmmakers.
Always shooting - Lucas
