WEDDING TVC - The Bridal Discount Book - Shot on Canon 5D Mark II using SmallHD DP6 Monitor

In November of 2011 I had the opportunity to direct, shoot and edit a TVC for Bridal Discount Book a one stop website which offers discount vouchers from trusted wedding vendors Australia wide.  Scheffilm is on the website if any happy couples are keen to get a discount off their wedding video DISCOUNT ON SCHEFFILM WEDDING VIDEOS

Our relationship with Bridal Discount Book began when Jeanette Sowerby managing director approached us to create a short web promo video for the website which can be viewed here BDB WEB PROMO starring our one and only Julie Dickson.

When we were later asked to shoot a television commercial for Bridal Discount Book we jumped at the chance as this was our first project to air on prime time TV.  A lot was learnt dealing with the television network the TVC was to air on and also the process involved in getting the TVC through classification and delivered technically correct.

The premise of the TVC centres around a bride to be day dreaming about her wedding day and hinting at where she found the secrets to sourcing all the wedding vendors she needed.

Julie was offered the role of the bride in the commercial, a great step in her career and an awesome opportunity not to be missed.

The overall TVC was shot in one full day in Adelaide, South Australia at one location.

I shot the TVC entirely on the Canon 5D Mark II which I monitored using the SmallHD DP6 Monitor a lightweight high resolution monitor that can be mounted directly on top of the camera and uses HDMI.  This is an ultimate monitor for those DSLR filmmakers on the move who want a quick and easy setup.  Another great feature about this monitor is that it compensates the issues that 5DmkII users have when sending an image to a external monitor.  As soon as you hit the record button on the 5DmkII the image on the SmallHD monitor doesn't alter or change size which is the annoying case on various other monitors on the market.
The following article has a heap of information on the reasons behind the 5DmkII and external monitor issues: EFFECTIVE PIXELS 101 (one thing we all have to remember is the 5DmkII was built for photographers it was never intended to go so far in the field of filmmaking so there is always bound to be a few minor set backs we all need to come to terms with when using this camera - at the end of the day though it's one of the greatest bits of image capturing devices ever made!)

Lenses used on the TVC:

Canon 50mm f1.2 L series (a great bit of glass!  you could very well shoot anything and everything on this lens!  a must have in any photographer/cinematographers kit.  very fast and great in low light situations - oh the bokeh!)

Canon 85mm f1.2 L series (a very good bit of glass however I'm not a big fan to be honest, the focus ring on this lens is extremely loose which in turn hinders your focus - inaccurate - use wisely with caution!)

Canon 24 - 105mm  f4 L series (this comes standard if you buy the 5Dmkii in the bundle kit, it's not a fast lens so struggles in low light situations however it's a very tough and well made zoom lens offering you a great focal length and so versatile to use when outdoors, a great all round lens)

Canon 100mm f2.8 ( a simple and effective lens for the price, not L series however not to shabby either)

Lighting on the TVC consisted on some Arri 650s, Red Heads, Dedos and a brute HMI.  I also pulled out a wally dolly to created some great movement for a series of shots.

A big shout out must go to my crew on the day Christopher Warman, Rhiannon Miller, Kim Scheffel, Melanie Pokorny and Michael Connell.

The Bridal Discount Book TVC is currently screening on Adelaide TV on Channel Nine and GO.  Please keep an eye out for it or watch it below:
